About the Author
Daniel Turtel, winner of the 2018 gold medals for both Novella and Novel-in Progress, is a fiction writer from New York City. His winning manuscripts are Among the Porcelain, judged best novella by the highly accomplished fiction writer Moira Crone, and Greetings from Asbury Park, judged best novel-in-progress by best-selling fiction writer M. O. Walsh. After growing up in Asbury Park, NY, Daniel attended Duke University, graduating in 2013 with a degree in Mathematics and a minor in creative writing. While at Duke, Dan studied with one of the best writers the South has produced, Michael Malone, author of the southern classic, Handling Sin. Dan’s first full-length novel, Sunrise for Asphodel, was first runner-up in the Faulkner Society’s 2014 William Faulkner – William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition. At the time he had two more novels in the works, For Every Man, A Country and Of Light and Violence, which were Novel-in-progress finalists in Faulkner – Wisdom Competition in 2014. In 2015, Dan was first runner-up for Of Light and Violence in the novel category. In 2016 Dan was selected First Runner-up in the Novella category by National Book Award winner Julia Glass and First Runner-up in the Short Story category by National Book Award winner Adam Johnson. He also was on the short list in the Novel category for Every Man a Country and in the Novel-in progress category for The Dyings of Eli Flint. In 2017, Dan again placed high in the competiton. He was on the short-lists for novel with his manuscript Where Ocean Meets the Country; for short story with a shorter version of his 2018 winning manuscript, Among the Porcelain; and for novel-in-progress for his manuscript By Emperor and Clown.
