Alison Fensterstock has been writing about music and culture in America in general, and New Orleans in particular, for the whole 21st century (so far.) An alumna of Newcomb College, she has served as music critic for the Gambit and the Times-Picayune and as founding program director for the Ponderosa Stomp roots-music festival, working on educational and archival efforts with partners including the Louisiana State Museum, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Where They At, her collection of New Orleans hip-hop and bounce oral histories, ephemera and portraiture was produced in partnership with photographer Aubrey Edwards. It was presented as a multimedia exhibit in several U.S. cities and Berlin – as well as on the grounds of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. It is now part of the permanent collection of the Amsted Research Center on Tulane University’s campus. As well as local publications, she contributes to Pitchfork, NPR Music, the Oxford American and other media.
