In spite of never ending, stupidly managed street work which has blighted New Orleans neighborhoods…a terror attack on Bourbon Street to kick-off 2025…an unparalleled crime wave…a record storm which dumped deep mounds of snow in our streets and gardens, lingering for days…and a Mardi Gras season disrupted by more bad weather…we lifted our heads and we are still smiling. Captivated and inspired by adventures and misadventures of an adorable fugitive terrier who united us in admiration for his courage and street smarts. We empathized with his craving to go home, awed by his daring determination to get home against daunting odds. We applauded his true grit. We fell in love with his scruffy good looks and discerning eyes. And we applauded the unwavering, kind-hearted rescuers who finally could deliver him to a caring family. Home at last! He is a living icon symbolizing the hope, faith, love of place, and ability to overcome heartbreaking losses, that resilience for which New Orleanians are noted. He reminds us that in spite of all we bear, this place we call home, New Orleans, gives us much to be thankful for and cause to make merry. Join us in celebrating our hero Scrim with a

Michelle Cheramie, A Heroine for the Ages!
Read SCRIM by Kaye Courington for the story of how one lovable terrier engaged the nation with his incredible feats of daring and determination in his search for
home again. It is the story of one unforgettable canine caper and of the woman who saved him, Michelle Cheramie, founder of Zeus’ Rescues and Zeus’ Place.
Michelle Cheramie, a native of Cut Off, LA—way down the bayou—has been rescuing anything that needed saving since she was a kid. If it looked lost, hurt, or hungry, she came home with it. After Hurricane Katrina, Michelle’s life changed dramatically. Before the storm, she as a network administrator for an international company. During Katrina, however, she lost her house, her Jeep, and just about everything she owned. Wanting to help other creatures in desperate situations, three days after the storm, she began working with national rescue groups to pull animals out of abandoned homes. These organizations needed someone who could drive a boat and knew the streets of New Orleans without street signs, someone who could handle water rescues. Michelle fit the bill and those first few traumatic weeks changed the course of her life.
“I realized rescue was what I was meant to do. I had lost everything, and the only thing that felt right was putting something good back into the world. I bought the old Eve’s Market on Freret, tore down what was left of my old house, built a new one on the same lot, and started over.”
Zeus’ Rescues officially became a 501(c)(3) in 2014. Today, Zeus’ Place has three locations, and shares its Napoleon Avenue space with Zeus’ Rescues. Zeus has grown to a team of 35 employees and a couple hundred incredible volunteers.
